USA, March 5—–“I’m Tony Stark. I build neat stuff, I got a great girl and, occasionally, save the world. So why can’t I sleep?” are the profound words of the great Tony Stark. Now is the time to comment on how great a film this is turning out to be. As opposed to being loud and bombastic, as most film trailers are, the Iron Man 3 trailers share deep, provocative bits of dialogue that truly make us wonder where the story is heading.

The trailer sheds a tad more light on the film’s Joker-like villain, the Mandarin. “You don’t know who I am,” says Ben Kingsley’s character and, in true Joker fashion—-elongating and enunciating his words—-continues, “You’ll never see me coming.” A chilling remark, if you think about it, as these aspects of the character’s diabolical nature create a terrific amount of suspense and conjecture. “Mr. Stark”, he states, “today is the first day of what’s left of your life”, commencing with the previously-seen destruction of Tony’s house. “I’m gonna offer you a choice: do you want an end to your life, or a meaningful death?” Truly, an unsettling villain with vast potential.

The trailer elaborates more on the relationship between Stark and Pepper; “Things are different now. I have to protect the one thing that I can’t live without. That’s you”, he says, pointing to Potts. Perhaps this time around Stark will have to pry himself away from his “looking out for #1” mentality and actually fight for something larger than even himself.

If Tony Stark’s motives were unclear before, his resolve is apparent now: stop the bad guy. An obvious task, probably the most widely-used plot in the genre of super-hero films, but yet still palpable if done right. This motive, vaguely-portrayed in Iron Man 2, will hopefully be manifest in this third act. “You’re not a man,” Stark says against the Mandarin, “You’re nothing more than a maniac. I’m not afraid of you. No politics here; just good, old-fashioned revenge.”

Of course, no Iron Man preview would be complete without a fresh dose of humor, as delivered by a short quip between Stark and his sidekick Rhodey. In a seemingly-tight spot, Stark states, “We do need backup,” to which Rhodey responds, “That’s your department.

The finale of the trailer shows the “backup” Stark is referring to: a host of iron men, fully armed and ready for battle. This film just got more interesting. “There’s my boys.”
