With Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit running strong in both domestic and foreign markets for just over two months now, the film has reached the $1 billion mark, making it the 15th film ever to achieve the prestigious milestone. When the film reached the $500 million mark on December 28, hopes were high among both fan boys and box office analysts.

Despite predictions that put the film on a collision course, destined to only achieve one-quarter of its current gross, the first of Jackson’s trilogy is off to a promising start. Domestically, the film has reached just over $300 million.

Though not quite as awe-inspiring as Jackson’s original trilogy, one small hobbit and a band of vagabond dwarves have captured the heart (and the wallets) of the world.
