”Avengers” Sequel Garners A Release Date

USA, August 16—–Now that The Avengers has broken new ground and made its place in cinematic history, Marvel already has plans for a sequel. A bit too soon, perhaps? The news may be a little sudden, but the date certainly is not—-May 5, 2015. No, that’s not a typo. Three years we must wait. But I suppose if we’ve waited five years for this one, three years isn’t all that bad. However, Marvel will keep plenty busy in the meantime working on “Phase Two.”

Iron Man 3 recently began production and will arrive in theaters this May. (See previous post for more information.)

Following that will be Thor: The Dark World featuring your favorite god. Chris Hemsworth will return to play the God of Thunder, as well as co-stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Natalie Portman, and Anthony Hopkins. Little is known about the plot at this time, as it is still in pre-production. This blog will be kept updated as more information emerges.

Thor 2 will be in theaters November 8, 2013.

Then, in April of the following year, we will be treated to the next chapter in the life of Captain America. Instead of battling elite Nazi forces, this time he will continue fighting for S.H.I.E.L.D. while coping with a life in the modern world. I personally am eager to see what they will do with Cap as they portray his struggle in dealing with modern times. I have always enjoyed Captain America, and perhaps with a new director this film will soar above the last.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will hit theaters April 4, 2014.

Despite all these sequels, Marvel also has an original film in the works, Guardians of the Galaxy. The Guardians are a team similar to the Avengers, but less local and a little more. . . widespread. According to Marvel.com, the Guardians are “a team of superhuman and extraterrestrial adventurers dedicated to the safeguarding of the Milky Way Galaxy from any force that threatens the security or liberty of its various people.”

Guardians of the Galaxy will appear in theaters August 1, 2014.

The Guardians have a long history of peace-keeping, stretching all the way to the 31st century. Throughout their past, they have had affiliations with Thor, Captain America, and Wolverine, and have battled against the villainous Doctor Doom. Though a little too “out of this world” for my taste, I am eager to see what new tricks Marvel has up their sleeves. It has even been rumored that the Guardians will appear in the forthcoming Avengers sequel to aid the Avengers in warding off Thanos.

Thanos? Who’s that? Oh yes, that’s the other tidbit of juicy information from the Marvel universe. . .

Do you remember that guy in the post-credits scene from The Avengers? Well, that’s Thanos. In Greek, his name means “death.” In the comics, Thanos fell madly in love with a female character called Death and, in an attempt to win her affection, half-destroyed the galaxy. Sounds like the perfect adversary for any Avengers or Guardians to ward off. The comment made at the end of that scene, “to challenge them [the humans] would be to court Death,” is an obvious reference to the comics, and a clue that Thanos will be the new bad guy for Avengers 2.

But we’re in for a long ride before Thanos or anyone touches our planet. Marvel will keep themselves quite busy and their viewers plenty entertained in the meantime.
